English 209: Paper Topic #1 -- "Dear Reader"
This is an unusual assignment, and one which will allow you considerable creative license.
Assume that Jane Eyre is not a completely reliable narrator--either because she's left out important parts of the story, or because she has a biased view of events. Write a letter from one of the characters in Jane Eyre to the reader explaining your perspective on some part of the story.
You are welcome to make up some new plot details--but you should also work with the text. You might choose to take issue with some of Jane's descriptions, her recounting of events, her philosophy and how it colors her narration, etc. Don't try to take on too much! By the end of the "letter," it should be clear how your character's perspective might change one's reading of the text.
This assignment will be judged on clarity, stylistic maturity, creativity, and evidence of close reading.
